Public Research Infrastructure – Life Sciences

Leading institutions include:

  • The Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health - located in Winnipeg, is Canada’s only research facility with Level 4 biocontainment capability for the study of both human and animal diseases. Recently named the home of Canada’s new Public Health Agency, the Centre’s research is focused on the areas of sexually transmitted diseases, enteric pathogens, bacteriology, special pathogens, immunology, and viral oncology.

  • The National Research Council (NRC) Institute for Biodiagnostics (IBD) - conducts research and develops instrument-based, non-invasive medical diagnostic technologies. The Institute performs its research in partnership with medical schools, universities, other research organizations, and industry .

  • The St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre - is a first-tier research facility that has gained a world-wide reputation for excellence in medical research. The Centre encompasses 3 free-standing medical research facilities:

    • The G. Campbell MacLean Building – the Centre’s main facility, with a mandate in three primary areas: basic and applied cardiovascular sciences, magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, and degenerative disorders associated with aging.
    • The Dr. Andrei Sakharov MRI Centre - a recognized leader in the MRI field, where radiologists can diagnose abnormalities of the brain, spine, internal organs and joints.
    • The I.H. Asper Clinical Research Institute - a state-of-the-art facility that enables researchers to conduct clinical trials of discoveries made at the Centre.

The Research Centre is also home to the University of Manitoba's Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and the National Centre for Agrifood Research in Medicine, and houses a number of other research programs.

  • CancerCare Manitoba - is the coordinating centre for oncology research in Manitoba. It is responsible cancer prevention, detection, care, research and education for the people of Manitoba. The affiliate Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology performs basic research in areas that include the molecular origins of cancer, the regulation of gene activity, AIDS, control of cell movement, inflammation and wound healing, programmed cell death and the biochemical action of cancer chemotherapeutics.

  • The Health Sciences Centre - serves as one of the province’s two teaching hospitals and actively participates in the health industry’s research environment. Research is conducted through the following facilities:
    • Health Sciences Centre Foundation
    • Children's Hospital Foundation
    • CancerCare Manitoba
    • Health Trials

Clinical Research

  • HealthTrials Inc. - An office within the Department of Research at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, HealthTrials offers project administration services to researchers and pharmaceutical companies to enhance clinical research conducted at the Health Sciences Centre.

  • The Manitoba Clinic - is one of Canada’s largest private multi-specialty medical clinics, with over 60 physicians on staff in a diverse range of medical programs and health care services. The Manitoba Clinic Research and Clinical Study unit acts as the coordinating centre for numerous advanced (beyond Phase II) pharmaceutical clinical trial programs.

  • Hill Top Research Inc. - is a contract research organization offering a wide range of studies types, with specialized capabilities in dry skin dermatology and SPF testing .

  • The Office of Clinical Research at St. Boniface General Hospital - provides education, liaison and support services to facilitate the conduct of clinical research within the Hospital. Support services are provided to investigators in the pharmaceutical, bio-medical, medical device and nutraceutical fields, and include regulatory consultation, budget development and review, review of investigator contracts, assistance with research grant applications, project management, and other services.
