Manitoba is a leader in developing and promoting technologies that help keep our air clean, improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. That’s why we’re pleased to welcome you to the first hydrogen engine powered bus to be tested on-road in Canada.
The Hydrogen Hybrid Internal Combustion Engine (HHICE) bus uses compressed hydrogen gas as its fuel, similar to vehicles now running on propane or natural gas. This novel technology offers all the benefits of using hydrogen, including clean exhaust and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, but at a low cost that is affordable today.
The bus was brought to Winnipeg for cold weather trials because Manitoba’s winter climate is ideal to test the durability of the HHICE technology. Buses and refuelling are an important hydrogen priority for Manitoba. This demonstration, was an important part of a larger overall strategy to move towards hydrogen, showcases several locally-made technologies and provides experience in producing, handling and using hydrogen as a vehicle fuel. It also highlighted the province's commitment to developing sustainable transportation.
Note: During early 2005, a HHICE bus cold weather demonstration test was conducted in Winnipeg. A New Flyer bus, equipped with a HHICE, was tested in regular for-fare service on a route running approximately 30 kilometres, from Northwest to Southeast Winnipeg.
