Kennedy’s next assignment with the company, in 1826, was as chief factor at Albany, where he spent three years. Life at the post on James Bay settled into daily and seasonal routines. In spring this meant watching for the break up of ice on the rivers and bay. Summer was the time to pack up furs to be shipped to England, prepare accounts and indents, and wait for the ship’s arrival in August. In early fall packages of supplies were sent by boat to the inland posts, vegetables were harvested, geese hunted, and preparations made for winter. Finally, in winter the focus was on trading, hunting, and surviving the cold.
