Preparation Before School Starts

Here is a listing of the steps that you should take prior to arranging your time spent in technical/in-school training.

  1. Apprentices should spend approximately six months of training on-the-job prior to attending classes. In preparation for in-school/ technical training, review the Technical Training Course Calendar (see section Technical Training) for a listing of up-coming courses, course registration procedures and responsibilities.
  2. Review the course schedule with your employer and arrange for time off work that suits both you and your employer.
  3. Register for technical training and pay required tuition fees.
  4. Ensure your report of hours are up-to-date.
  5. One of after your last day of work, establish an Employment Insurance claim. You will need your Record of Employment to begin.
    * If you were laid off in advance of technical training (i.e. 2-3 months) and obtaining general EI, then you will need to contact EI again once school begins to ensure you obtain appropriate coverage during technical training.
  6. Arrange to have money available to pay for books, shop supplies and safety equipment.

Review the sections on Finances & Awards and Supports and Services for more information.
