Manitoba’s hydroelectricity rates are among the lowest in the world.
Manitoba Hydro has a generating capacity of over 5,000 megawatts,virtually all from environmentally desirable, water-powered facilities.
Potential hydro-power-generating sites, that could double the existing generating capacity, have been identified. A new 200 megawatts hydro-electric station is current under construction in Northern Manitoba and a largeer 1,250 megawatts is being considered.
Additionally, Manitoba is pursuing several initiatives to develop alternative sources of energy, including biodiesel, ethanol, geothermal heat pump systems, hydrogen and wind power.
