Restorative Justice and other Diversions

Responsible and expanded use of diversions and restorative justice in appropriate cases is a key pillar of the CJMS. These alternative approaches permit offenders to take responsibility for the offence, make amends with the victim or community, take programming as required, and support public safety.

The total number of cases diverted to restorative justice or other measures has expanded to approximately 5,000 per year (1,250 per quarter). In 2019/2020 Q2, a record number of 1,297 cases were diverted.
