Chapter 12: An Unexpected Calamity

Still it was impossible to help feeling depressed at the thought of the little home in which we had passed such a happy winter being entirely destroyed and all my husband's labour for the past seven months wasted.

The Averill home burns down on February 29, 1881. Emma tells of the fire that destroys their home and their efforts to save their possessions and prevent the fire from spreading to the stable. Emma's problems are compounded by a case of severe frostbite on her toes.
