Chapter 10: Harvest Home

…the vicissitudes of the past five months made us feel only too thankful to be at last in a house we could consider our own.

As winter approaches, the Averills celebrate the harvest at the "Harvest Home" in Minnedosa, which includes a visit by Lieutenant-Governor Laird. Emma describes increasingly cold temperatures and preparations for winter, including hunting, storing root vegetables and weather-proofing their home. The chapter shows a shift from earlier chapters in Emma's attitude toward Aboriginal people as she becomes acquainted with them and more appreciative of their way of life.
