Chapter 9: Life in a Shanty

…when we came in sight of our future residence, the children shouted 'It's a house, it's a house' in the greatest of glee, as if they had never lived in one before

Homestead life begins as the Averills settle into their shanty. Emma describes her new everyday routines (laundry, keeping mosquitoes out of the house, school lessons and church services) and the house raising which brings the community together to help build the Averills' first house.
