NOTICE: Update Re-issuance of Option Licence to Explore Forestry Development in Eastern Manitoba

Latest information was posted May 10, 2021

The Department of Agriculture and Resource Development has received a new request pursuant to The Forest Act and is hereby providing public notice.

The First Nation Consortium (10040629 Manitoba Limited) comprised of Black River First Nation, Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, Hollow Water First Nation, and Sagkeeng Anicinabe Government has proposed a potential Indigenous-led commercial forest development in eastern Manitoba. The Consortium currently holds an Option Licence which will expire effective July 4, 2021. As such, they have submitted a request for a new two-year year Option Licence.

Under Section 19 of The Forest Act, a two-year Option Licence may be issued to provide an interested party with the opportunity to investigate the sustainable development potential of a forested area. The Option Licence does not grant timber harvesting rights. However, it is the first step for an interested party to determine whether they would like to pursue negotiations with the Province towards obtaining a Forest Management Licence (FML) and a Forest Management Licence Agreement (FMLA).  Figure 1 shows the area of interest of the Option Licence.

Anyone with comments or questions regarding the information provided in this notice should contact Marie Storey, Forestry and Peatlands Branch by e-mail at Marie.Storey@gov.mb.ca  no later than June 25, 2021.
