On July 10, 2006, Manitoba Water Stewardship issued an Interim Licence under the Water Power Act to Wuskwatim Power Limited Partnership, a legal entity involving Manitoba Hydro and the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN), for the development of water power at the Wuskwatim site. |
The 210 megawatt (MW) Wuskwatim Generating Station is located on the Burntwood River near Wuskwatim Lake, approximately 45 km southwest of Thompson and 35 km southeast of Nelson House. The project was completed in 2012.
The primary works include a powerhouse with three fixed-blade turbine units, a spillway with three bays, and a main dam and dyke to contain the immediate forebay.

The Wuskwatim Generating Station was the first hydroelectric generating station in Manitoba to go through an Environment Act approval process which included a hearing by the Clean Environment Commission (CEC).
