The Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act (PIDA)

Supervisors

Who is a supervisor?

A supervisor is anyone who has a reporting relationship with an employee of a department, government body, or office covered under The Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act (PIDA).

Role

Supervisors may receive a disclosure of wrongdoing from an employee and are required to refer the disclosure to their organization's designated officer.

Responsibilities

A supervisor who receives a disclosure must:

  • determine how the disclosing employee wants to receive communication on the disclosure – either written, via e-mail or verbally
  • notify the designated officer about the disclosure
  • transfer the disclosure in a confidential manner to the designated officer for further review and handling
  • maintain confidentiality throughout the process

Supervisors must ensure they protect the identity of the disclosing employee and to maintain the confidentiality of any information related to the disclosure.

Supervisors who have questions about PIDA or their role are directed to their designated officer or the Manitoba Ombudsman.
