Extension and Enhancing Indigenous Food Systems

Supports activities to develop and implement community based food systems from planning through to development and implementation. Food systems planning includes a broad range of activities that may include revitalization of traditional food systems, agriculture, community gardens, and local food sovereignty initiatives, and processing and preservation.

Eligible Applicants

  • Indigenous Government
  • Indigenous Community
  • Indigenous Group
  • Indigenous individuals, businesses, communities, and organizations,
  • other Indigneous groups undertaking agricultural initiatives

OR

  • Producer organizations, processor organizations, other industry organizations, research bodies, or municipal government with demonstrated commitment and interest from Indigenous partner and direct benefit to Indigenous partner.

Eligible Activities

This may include but is not limited to:

  • Land assessments, land use plans, and feasibility studies
  • Opportunity assessment and evaluation (may include asset mapping),
  • Developing business plans and community food system, agriculture and/or food processing initiatives,
  • Infrastructure and capital investments to accelerate the revitalization and growth of Indigenous foods systems,
  • Testing and adopting technologies or practices to enhance food systems and related knowledge transfer activities,
  • Developing business plans to support scaling up existing food systems and/or food processing initiatives; and
  • Addressing climate change and enhancing climate change resiliency through land based learning initiatives.
  • Hiring of trained individuals to assist communities with food system initiatives, research, land mapping or other activities including the extension knowledge where requested
  • The development of resource materials that focus on food system development and expansion, increases agriculture knowledge, business management and planning, risk awareness, and market expansion.
