MUNICIPAL COUNCIL MEMBERS’ CODE OF CONDUCT

Citizens expect that members of municipal councils will fulfill their duties with honesty and integrity. Values of respect, professionalism and accountability are key to good governance and maintaining confidence in our public institutions.

The Council Members’ Codes of Conduct Regulation came into effect on November 1, 2020. This regulation requires all municipalities establish a code of conduct by-law that applies to all members of council. The by-law establishes the standards and values that council expects members to meet in their dealings with each other, employees of the municipality, and the public, and mandates training for all council members. The content of each Municipal Council Code of Conduct by-law must be based on and incorporate the following values:

RESPECT PROFESSIONALISM ACCOUNTABILITY

The Council Members’ Codes of Conduct Regulation defines the requirements that must be met and standardizes the complaint procedure for violations. The regulation also outlines sanctions that can be placed on a member of council when they have violated the code of conduct by-law in their municipality.
