Vehicle Licensing
Manitoba Public Insurance licenses vehicles according to the use of the vehicle. Several factors determine how the vehicle is registered:
- passenger vehicles (no Safety Fitness Certificate required)
- only registered to individuals
- vehicles with manufacturer's seating capacity of 11 people or more, including the driver
- used exclusively for personal use
- regular trucks (no Safety Fitness Certificate required)
- only registered to individuals
- registered gross vehicle weight of 4,500 kg or more
- used exclusively for personal use
- farm trucks (no Safety Fitness Certificate required)
- trucks with a registered gross vehicle weight of 4,500 kg or more
The following vehicles are regulated vehicles and require the registrant to have a valid Safety Fitness Certificate in order to register them.
- regulated busses
- a bus or van with manufacturer's seating capacity of 11 people or more, including the driver
- used to transport people
- regulated commercial trucks
- registered gross vehicle weight of 4,500 kg or more
- being used for commercial purposes
- only transporting the registrant's goods
- limited use commercial trucks
- registered gross vehicle weight of 4,500 kg or more
- used for commercial purposes
- only transporting the registrant's goods
- operating within a certain radius of the business and/or carrying qualifying commodities (see section 12(2) of the Regulated Vehicles (Safety Fitness, Operator Identification and Records and Vehicle Exemptions) Regulation
