Victim Travel Fund

What is the Victim Travel Fund?

The Victim Travel Fund provides financial assistance for surviving family members and, in some cases, their support persons to attend sentencing hearings in court matters involving fatalities (e.g. homicides, workplace fatalities or highway traffic fatalities).

Who can apply to this program?

You may be eligible for this program if:

  • you are a direct family member of the deceased,
  • you must travel more than 100 kilometres (one-way) to attend the sentencing,
  • the sentencing is taking place in Manitoba, and
  • you are connected with a victim services worker.

If you are not connected with a victim services worker, please call 1-866-484-2846.

What does this program cover?

The Victim Travel Fund can assist up to three individuals per fatality, up to a set maximum amount. The assistance available includes the most economical form of transportation, accommodation and meal allowances.

  • Transportation:
    • can include mileage, flights, taxis, parking, etc.
    • is provided to attend the sentencing date only
  • Accommodation:
    • assistance is usually limited to a maximum of two nights
    • assistance is provided for the room charge only (guest charges or damages are not covered)
  • Meal Allowances:
    • provided according to the Manitoba government’s per diem guidelines (subject to change)
    • Note: To receive a breakfast allowance, your travel must start before 7 a.m. To receive a lunch allowance, your travel must start before noon. To receive a dinner allowance, your travel must end after 6 p.m.

How do I apply for the Victim Travel Fund?

You must complete a Victim Travel Fund application form. You can request the form from your assigned victim services worker or the Victim Services office in your area.

Is there a time limit to apply?

You should submit your application one month prior to the date of the sentencing to allow Victim Travel Fund coordinators time to book transportation and accommodations and process your meal allowance cheque.

You can submit your application up to one week prior to the travel date. However, your meal allowance cheque will not be provided at the sentencing location; it will be mailed to you afterward.

For travel dates less than one week away, contact your victim services worker to discuss options.

What happens next?

A Victim Travel Fund coordinator will contact you to provide the proposed travel plan and discuss options. They will book your travel and hotel and order your meal allowance cheque. If you applied at least one month in advance, the cheque will be provided at the sentencing location. If you applied later, the cheque will be mailed to you afterward.

A detailed travel plan will be provided to you with dates, times, addresses, confirmation numbers, etc.

If the sentencing is not completed on the expected date and a continuation is set for a later date, you may attend the continuation date without re-submitting your application. Please inform your victim services worker if you wish to attend the continuation so arrangements can be made.
