Adverse Driving Conditions

If weather conditions, road conditions or visibility is impaired, carriers and drivers are responsible for making safe decisions. Travel is not allowed when adverse driving conditions exist.

Adverse driving conditions are when:

  • visibility is less than 500 metres
  • strong winds affect vehicle stability or impair the driver's ability to the point where it is difficult to keep the vehicle within the travel lane
  • the condition of the road surface affects vehicle stability or impairs the driver's ability to the point where it is difficult to keep the vehicle within the travel lane

A reasonable effort must be made to determine driving conditions based on information available from Environment Canada and Manitoba Road Info 511.

If adverse driving conditions exist, drivers can reroute if permit conditions allow. If not, vehicles will exit the roadway at the first available opportunity and park in a safe location until adverse driving conditions clear.
