U.S. Motor Carriers
Section 312.2 of the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act requires all motor carriers and operators of regulated vehicles to hold a valid safety fitness certificate in Manitoba.
Regulated vehicles are defined as a truck or tractor with a registered GVW of 4,500 kgs (10,000 lbs) or greater, or a passenger vehicle or bus with a seating capacity of 11 or more passengers, including the driver.
Effective Sept. 1, 2025, U.S. motor carriers that do not hold an equivalent operating authority from another Canadian jurisdiction, will be required to:
- apply for a new Manitoba Safety Fitness Certificate, adhering to the same requirements as new Manitoba carriers, including insurance, vehicle inspection, education, and safety standards.
- annually renew their certificate, providing documentation demonstrating they continue to meet or exceed Manitoba operator and regulated vehicle standards.
- ensure their company name or logo and their newly assigned National Safety Code number or Canadian equivalent are clearly displayed on their vehicles so they can be easily identified by other road users.
