Manitoba Child Care Search

Frequently Asked Questions for Families

What is the Manitoba Child Care Search (MCCS)?
Manitoba Child Care Search is a new search tool used to connect Manitoba families directly with licensed child care facilities. Using this tool, families can search for facilities that meet their needs based on location, hours and availability. Once you find a facility that has an open space and meets your needs, you can contact them directly to arrange your child care service.

What are some of the other benefits of the MCCS?
Parents will be able to use the new MCCS features, targeted to go live on August 31, 2021, including:

  • An interactive map that makes it easier to browse facilities and find providers near the desired location. Users can filter the map by care type, facility type, vacancies and availability.
  • Expanded facility information to help families make decisions prior to contacting a provider, including contact information, hours of operation, languages of care, highlights of programming, enrollment policies and for-profit versus non-profit status.
  • A link to the facility's licence, so parents can find out if the facility has a licence in good standing or a provisional licence, the maximum number of children allowed at the facility, the period of the licence and any conditions applicable to the facility before making a decision about placement.
  • Information about when the data was last updated, to ensure parents know if the vacancies posted and other programming information is up-to-date.

I am currently on the Online Child Care Registry (OCCR) waitlist. Will I lose my existing child care space?
No. If your child is already enrolled in a child care space, you will not lose your existing space during the transition to the new system.

Can I still access my OCCR account and update my information before the OCCR is formally retired?
Yes. You will be able to log in to your OCCR account until August 30, 2021 to ensure your information is up-to-date, take note of the facilities you have registered and ensure your child is placed on your preferred child care facility waitlists. You can access your OCCR account information at https://onlinechildcareregistry.gov.mb.ca/OCCRWeb/en/Sessions/New.

I am already registered on the OCCR. Do I need to contact facilities and re-register? Do I have to start over?
Each facility will receive a copy of their final waitlist from the OCCR as of August 2021 for consideration when filling vacant spaces. However, we strongly recommend contacting the facilities you are interested in to re-confirm your interest, learn about their enrollment policies, find estimated wait times and learn more about their program. Each facility has their own enrollment policies and procedures about how to fill vacancies. We recommend asking for the enrollment policies of the facilities you are interested in.

What happens to the time I've already been waiting since I've registered on the Online Child Care Registry?
Each facility will receive a copy of their final waitlist from the OCCR as of August 2021 for consideration when filling vacant spaces. Each facility has their own enrollment policies and procedures about how to fill vacancies. We recommend asking for the enrollment policies of the facilities you are interested in.

How will I know what facilities have a spot open or available?
Facilities can list their vacancies on the search tool. With the enhanced MCCS features to go live on August 31, 2021, you will be able to see all child care facilities and then turn a search filter on if you would like to see only those facilities with vacancies.

Facilities are prompted to update their information on a weekly basis, and as part of the new features, the MCCS will show when the information was last updated.

Please note, it is possible that you may see a vacancy posted on the MCCS and contact a facility, but that space may no longer be available by the time you call, as it may be filled by another family within that week.

Will I be able to contact facilities directly?
Yes. The MCCS allows you to have direct contact with facilities and learn more about their services and how they can support your child's development. Developing this connection is an important part of finding the right facility for you and your child. Learn more about things you should consider when selecting a child care facility and other important information in "A Guide to Child care in Manitoba."

How do I get on a facility waitlist?
Contact facilities you are interested directly. Each facility has their own method of maintaining waitlists according to their own enrollment policies.

How are facilities held accountable to honour their waitlists? How do I know they haven't lost my information or skipped my name?
Each facility has their own enrollment policies and procedures about how to fill vacancies. We recommend asking for the enrollment policies of the facilities you are interested in. We recommend keeping a record of your contact with facilities and encourage you to keep open and consistent communication with the facilities you are interested in.

How do I know where I am on the waitlist of the facilities I contact?
As independent organizations, each facility is responsible for managing enrollment according to their own policies. Please contact facilities directly regarding your waitlist status.

How long will I have to wait to get a space?
Wait times vary by facility, depending on demand, location and capacity. Due to the complex nature of filling spaces, facilities may not be able to guarantee their estimates for placement. Contact the facilities you are interested in for more information.

How do facilities choose who gets a spot? Is it first come, first served?
Each facility has their own enrollment policies and procedures about how to fill vacancies. We recommend asking for the enrollment policies of the facilities you are interested in.
