Opportunities for Manitobans

  How is this information helpful?
The information on this page is meant to provide a quick overview of occupations that offer well-paying future employment opportunities for Manitobans across a variety of educational backgrounds. These occupations are expected to have a large number of openings, many of which are expected to go unfilled. This can support students and job seekers in making informed decisions about future careers, training, and education.

Overview

The High Opportunity Occupations List is based on four factors:
*

The 2023-27 Labour Market Outlook makes projections about Manitoba’s future labour market based on past trends, research and 2022 data. While efforts are made to ensure the Outlook is accurate and comprehensive, it may not capture all labour market developments or recent announcements.

For example, the Outlook does not currently reflect the anticipated increase in early childcare professional job openings that will be created to support the development of 23,000 new childcare spaces. Additionally, the forecast does not capture anticipated job growth in the healthcare sector and the Manitoba government's commitment to create 10,000 new skilled trade jobs over the next eight years.

  • the number of projected job openings
  • the wage rate
  • how easy it is to secure a job now
  • how easy it will be to secure a job in the future

How many job opportunities will be available?

This is determined by the forecasted number of job openings, the ratio of openings to current employment levels and the forecasted rate of employment growth. Occupations with a higher and faster growing number of openings offer more opportunities to jobseekers.

How easy is it to get a job now?

This is determined by comparing the number of people currently employed in an occupation to the number of unemployed people that had been trained in and/or previously employed in that same occupation. Where there is a high number of unemployed people in an occupation it means there is a lot of competition for openings in those occupations. It is easier to get a job where there is a lower number of unemployed people competing for the same job.

How easy will it be to get a job in the future?

This is determined by looking at the expected future unemployment rate for individual occupations. Occupations expected to have relatively low unemployment rates will provide better opportunities for Manitobans to find employment in the future.

How well does the job pay?

This is determined by the prevailing wage rates for individual occupations. Occupations with higher prevailing wage rates compared to other jobs requiring the same level of education offer better opportunities for Manitobans to support themselves and their families.
