    What are key terms and definitions I should know?

    JOURNEYPERSON

    A journeyperson is a person who holds a Certificate of Qualification in a provincial or Red Seal endorsed trade.

    RED SEAL

    The Red Seal program is Canada’s standard of excellence for skilled trades. Trades that are recognized by the Red Seal program allow journeypersons who have obtained a Red Seal on their Certificate of Qualification to receive recognition of their certification across Canada.

    COMPULSORY CERTIFICATION TRADE(S)

    Compulsory certification trades are trades that require workers to be certified as a journeyperson or be registered as an apprentice to be able to work in the trade.

    VOLUNTARY TRADE(S)

    Voluntary trades are trades that do not require workers to be a certified journeypersons or registered as an apprentice in order to work in the trade. Apprenticeship training is highly recommended, but not a legal requirement.

    INDUSTRY WORKING GROUPS (IWGs)

    Industry working groups (IWGs) are time-limited advisory committees that represent the needs of a given trade. IWGs are appointed by sector committees on an as-needed basis to advise the sector committees in their decision-making processes.

    PROVINCIAL TRADE(S)

    Provincial trades are trades that are designated in Manitoba but not recognized by the Red Seal standard.

    INTERPROVINCIAL TRADE(S)

    Interprovincial trades are trades that are endorsed by the Red Seal standard. Trades that are recognized by the Red Seal program meet interprovincial standards of excellence as outlined by the Red Seal program.

    How do Apprenticeship Manitoba and the Apprenticeship and Certification Board work together?

    Apprenticeship Manitoba plays a secretariat function to the board. The branch brings requests forward from industry for the board to deliberate on and relays recommendations from the board to the minister for further consideration.

    I don’t agree with some of the regulatory requirements related to my trade. Who can I talk to?

    The Apprenticeship and Certification Board is responsible for providing recommendations to the minister on the provisions under each of the trade regulations. You can bring forward your concerns related to the trade regulations to the board by emailing: apprenticeshipboard@gov.mb.ca.
