Being able to move to other places in Canada without interrupting your apprenticeship training provides you the opportunity to work and train throughout the country.

The Provincial-Territorial Apprentice Mobility Protocol and the Provincial-Territorial Apprentice Mobility Agreement provide guidelines that inform apprentices how they can continue their training should they move to another province or territory.

The agreement is for apprentices who leave their home province:

  • Temporarily - to work, and where they may also be able to take technical training and write exams.
  • Permanently - where they will receive recognition for their training and the exams that they have successfully completed in the same or equivalent trade without having to repeat their training.

The agreement also provides guidelines to recognize those who have taken a pre-employment program.

The Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA) allows for:

  • the free movement of services within Canada.
  • workers who are certified for a trade by a regulatory authority (government) in one province to be recognized as qualified for that same trade by all other provinces.

This means if you have received certification elsewhere in Canada for a trade categorized as compulsory in Manitoba, your certification may be recognized.

If you have a Red Seal certification on a provincial Certificate of Qualification, or another equivalent credential, in a compulsory certification trade, you can apply to have your credentials assessed and recognized so you can work in Manitoba. If your trade is categorized as voluntary, the CFTA certification process does not apply because you can work in Manitoba without mandatory credentials. You are legally allowed to work in the trade without certification.

Subject to approval, a letter of recognition will be provided to you so that you can work in Manitoba.
