Trade Profiles

Manitoba’s designated trades are divided into four categories.
Trade Categories
-
Interprovincial Red Seal
The Red Seal program, also called the Interprovincial program, sets common standards to assess the skills of tradespeople across Canada. When you pass the Red Seal certification exam for a trade it means you have the knowledge and skills to practise your trade across Canada. You can also use the national Red Seal Endorsement (RSE) for qualified skilled journeypersons on your business cards and signatures as a way to demonstrate your certification. Learn more about the Red Seal Program.
-
Provincial
Not all trades offer Red Seal certification; some are provincial trades. Provincial trades are trades that are designated in Manitoba, but not recognized by the Red Seal standard.
See the trade profiles below and note which are marked with the Red Seal symbol and which are provincial, marked with the Manitoba province.
-
Trades Compulsory Certification
Nine of the 50+ trades in Manitoba are classified as compulsory certification trades (the rest are voluntary.) To work in these trades you must be: registered as an apprentice, or be a certified journeyperson.
-
Trades Voluntary
If a trade is voluntary, registering as an apprentice is optional. This means you can work in the trade without being an apprentice or journeyperson. There are, however, many benefits to becoming an apprentice as you begin your career in the trades.
-
Out of Province
Indicates when technical training is provided out of province. Technical training institutions for this trade are located outside of Manitoba and are listed within the specific trade profile page.
-
Only Trade Qualifiers
Certification is available only as a trade qualifier.
Review the trade category chart to see all trades categorized by type of certification, Red Seal and provincial, and by voluntary and compulsory certification trades.
