Newcomers

For newcomers to Manitoba, if you intend to work in any of the nine compulsory certification trades, you are legally required to be a registered apprentice or certified journeyperson to work in those trades. If your trade is categorized as voluntary, it means you can work in your trade without being registered as an apprentice.
Foreign Apprentices in the Construction Sector
The Government of Canada has introduced a temporary measure that allows active apprentices with a valid work permit and who are working in certain residential construction occupations to apply to the Government of Canada for permission to take training without a study permit. This temporary measure is in place until February 2027.

You are required to provide the approved Authorization Letter from the Government of Canada to Apprenticeship Manitoba before you will be able to register for technical training while on a work-permit. Once you have obtained your Authorization Letter, contact your Apprenticeship Training Coordinator and they will assist you with being able to register for technical training.
Whether you plan to be an apprentice, or plan to challenge the certification exam as a trade qualifier, you must reside in Manitoba when you apply.
