The Apprenticeship and Certification Board recommended the de-designation of the trade of Electrologist in Manitoba, and the Minister of Business, Mining, Trade and Job Creation approved moving forward with the legislative process to implement the change.

Manitoba's apprenticeship and certification system is designed to be responsive to changing workforce and industry needs. As consumer preferences, industry practices and workforce needs related to electrology services have evolved since the trade was originally designated, the trade's continued designation is no longer the most effective way to support the industry today. This change supports labour mobility, a shared priority of Manitoba and the Government of Canada, while aligning Manitoba's electrology services with other Canadian jurisdictions.

Once the legislative amendments are complete, registration, training and certification under Manitoba's apprenticeship and certification system will no longer be required to provide electrology services in Manitoba.

While the required legislative amendments are being completed, the trade will continue to be designated as a compulsory certification trade.

During this time, individuals may apply to Apprenticeship Manitoba for an interim exemption permit that allows them to legally practice until the trade is no longer designated as a compulsory certification trade in Manitoba and is no longer regulated by Apprenticeship Manitoba.

What is changing?

Once the legislative amendments come into force, which includes the repeal of the Trade of Electrologist Regulation, to provide electrology services in Manitoba:

• apprenticeship registration will no longer be required

• certification under Manitoba's apprenticeship and certification system will no longer be required

What is not changing?

• Existing certificates of qualification remain valid and continue to serve as evidence that the holder completed Manitoba's apprenticeship and certification requirements while the trade was designated.

• Manitoba Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care will continue to regulate personal service facilities and enforce infection prevention and control requirements under The Public Health Act and associated public health legislation.

Legislative Transition

While the required legislative amendments are being completed, a transition period will be in place. During this time, individuals may apply to Apprenticeship Manitoba for an interim exemption permit that allows them to legally practice until the trade is no longer designated as a compulsory certification trade in Manitoba and is no longer regulated by Apprenticeship Manitoba.
