A powerline technician is certified to install, test, repair and maintain electrical apparatuses in generating and converter stations and substations. This equipment is used to generate, transmit, distribute and convert electricity. One very important requirement of this trade, in addition to the technical knowledge, is the need to observe and practise safety at all times because of the hazards and dangers associated with electricity. Power electricians work both inside and outside buildings and structures such as thermal and hydraulic generating stations, substations and other utility-owned buildings. Maintenance work takes place on the ground and at various heights requiring bucket-truck or ladder work.

Powerline technicians are employed by electrical utility companies such as Manitoba Hydro.
